Sometimes, we forget what books have been featured or talked about in the past few months. I came across some books that are worth a second look! One has been recommended by our Change This editor as a must read (Zenobia), another has been a Jack Covert Selects (Myself and Other More Important Matters), while the others I just felt the need to bring them back into the light and recognize them as invaluable resources for today's business environment.
So, for your consideration - - - take time to look at the titles again (maybe for some of you - this will be the first time):

This is just a little reminder for me to tell you to take some time for yourself this summer. Everyone gets caught up in everyday living and we worry about everything all the time. This summer, promise to do something 'cool' for you. One thing, of course, is treating yourself to a good book. Here are some ideas for you to have a 'mental margarita'.
You: The Owner's Manual - An Inside Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger - One of the best books on how to take care of yourself.
The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company and - The Celebrity Experience: Insider Secrets to Delivering Red Carpet Customer Service - These are great business books that are actually fun to read!
Keeping in tune with The Celebrity Experience (in time for the Tony Awards) you may want to check out Backstage Pass: Broadway Bares or even Always by My Side: A Father's Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike Any Other - just in time for Fathers' Day.
If you nothing above piqued your interest to aid in getting your mind off of day-to-day rituals, here's a spattering of titles I just finished reading:
You can even give your eyes a rest and get something on a Compact Disc !!
Of course these are just some suggestions.... if you want to pick one of these or comment on what you like or want to read, please do so! It will help for ideas to get everyone to take a little break this sunny season!
The Celebirity Experience - Part II

For some reason, this morning I recalled something I read in Donna Cutting's The Celebrity Experience. In the beginning of the book she talked about assisted living and it struck a cord with me. One of my friends works in a place for senior citizens and they implemented some things that were brought up early on in The Celebrity Experience to make the residents feel more at home. It is very hard to change ideals and thoughts on a very rigid institution like a nursing home or assisted living, but like the example in this book and in care places such as St. John's on the Lake in Milwaukee, things are changing for the better. Here's a little about it from the book:
For several years, I worked in the field of elder care with seniors who live in assisted-living communities. If you you've ever had to help a parent move into a retirement care community then you know how difficult it can be for everyone. It would break my heart watching children and their parents wrestle with the decision. The adult children are wracked with guilt, often dealing with parents who are fighting the decision, and filled with confusion about whether they are making the right choice.
Despite what you may hear on the new or on the television ads sponsored by law firms, most elder care professionals are sensitive to this transition and bend over backward to be helpful and make it easier. However, as with many industries, they are often short on staff and are overregulated, which sometimes means that people get shortchanged as a result of the process.
Cut to the conversation I had with my friend Andrea, a marketing director at a large assisted-living company. She was telling me about an idea that she and her boss had about how they would welcome prospective and new residents to their community.
At their community, prospective residents and their family members would be welcomed by a valet at the front drive. The valet would be expecting them, and would greet them by name and with a smile as he helped them out of their car.
Another designated greeter would walk the visitors down a red carpet and into the building. Inside they would see a banner that welcomed them personally to the community.
I know this doesn't sound like a lot, but things like: offering the residents choices such as menu items, bed time and activities during the day instead of having them all do one thing at the same time are all things that can be done to encourage and promote importance and empowerment that are needed in any organization.
Take time to look into this book on how to really treat people and how to get treated like a celebrity yourself. We're offering FREE regular ground shipping until March 1st, 2008 for this book, regardless of quantity. And if you get a chance, PBS aired a special presentation of the nursing home my friend works at called Almost Home. (The show has many of the examples Cutting's book brings up and you can actually see how the very simple things in life can change a person's outlook towards life and make them seem like they are one of the most important people around.)

I went to one of my favorite places for lunch last week. It's simply called Soup's On, a great little spot to get, well... Soup!
It's an art gallery showcasing the works of local artists with an eatery in the back featuring a great view of the Milwaukee River. Awesome to say the least, but that's not the only thing that's cool about it. It's Mary, she makes the homemade soups fresh everyday. Four of them: a chili, a chicken themed concoction, one vegetarian and the other is usually vegan.
But I digress, back to business, so, I came in the other day with a friend of mine and she said hello to each of us by name. We stood in the line with about 10 other people (it's usually like that all the time during the lunch rush). She also said hello's to most of the other people, by name as well. When it was my time to place my order, I asked her about the Pumpkin Basil and was immediately given a sample. I loved it and ordered a large bowl. When the line of customers finally slowed down, she came over and asked my opinion of the soup. She thought about adding peppers or even making it into a chili. I gave her my thoughts about adding various colors of peppers and she said she'd give it a try.
Basically, Mary made me feel sort of like Jack Nicholson at the Oscars. Johnny Depp on the red carpet. Paris Hilton....well maybe not like Miss H., but still she treated me like a celebrity nonetheless.
It's not that hard for a company to do this. Donna Cutting's new book: The Celebrity Experience gives great examples of how an organization can do this, no matter what! She emphasizes that too many people say no or can't see a way to make things happen. Cutting gives us six tasks or ways to make everyone feel like a Rock Star.
1. Ask (What if....?)
2. Choose Your Customers over Convenience
3. Think Big
4. Partner with Others
5. Own the Problem
6. Refuse to Be Satisfied
I'm not going to go into each of these steps, you HAVE to get the book and see for yourself! But I will mention one more thing about this book, it also tells you HOW to get the Celebrity Experience for yourself! Yep, it's possible to be on the red carpet yourself! (And just in time for the Oscars.)
Tell ya what, to get the word out to you, I'm going to offer free regular ground shipping on all orders placed on our web site for this book until the first of February. Hurry up and experience The Celebrity Experience (paparazzi not included).
