Sympathy for the Devil
Originally published in 1987, this is the first novel by Kent Anderson, whose Night Dogs was a New York Times Notable Book of 1998. The story of a college student who goes to war with a volume of Yeats in his pocket and discovers his own savagery as a Green Beret, "Sympathy for the Devil" has gained classic stature as a wrenchingly honest and disturbing novel of men in war. "Doomed to survive" the war, as Anderson puts it, his protagonist, Hanson, is forever changed by it. "Sympathy for the Devil" established Kent Anderson as a novelist with a vision and a voice too powerful to ignore.
